Francis on Drumming: Q&A Session

Q: Can you share how you first got into drumming?

A: “Absolutely! My drumming journey began quite organically. As a child, I found rhythm in everything and anything around me—turning powder milk cans into my first drum set. By the age of three, my parents recognized my passion and gifted me a real drum set, marking the beginning of my lifelong journey with drums.”

Q: How do you approach drumming, especially in a band setting?

A: “Drumming, for me, is about communication and feeling the energy of both the audience and my bandmates. It’s crucial to listen actively and adapt. Dynamics play a huge role in how I approach drumming. Whether it’s adjusting to the room’s ambiance or syncing with the band’s vibe, it’s all about creating a coherent musical conversation.”

Q: What advice would you give to drummers starting their journey?

A: “Patience and consistency are key. The world of drumming is vast and can be overwhelming, but it’s important to take it one step at a time. Utilize tools like metronomes and apps to practice. Also, expose yourself to various musical styles and drummers—it broadens your perspective and enhances your skills.”

Q: Are there any tools or technologies you recommend for learning and practicing?

A: “I highly recommend the Pro Metronome app for its versatility and the unique practice features it offers. For those interested in blending electronic elements, Fader has been a game-changer, allowing you to isolate or enhance drum parts in any track.”

Q: Any drummers or bands you believe every aspiring drummer should listen to?

A: “Definitely! I look up to Larnell Lewis for his versatility and musicality. For those exploring Afro-Dominican rhythms, Yasser Tejeda’s work is enlightening. Also, other talented musicians like Xiomara Fortuna, also known as “La Reina de la Fusión”, translated to English as “The Queen of Fusion”, Alaign Pérez, and Larnell Lewis, one of the most talented drummers I know, and would love to meet in person. I believe learning from them, can provide valuable lessons on how simplicity can sometimes lead to the most profound musical expressions.”
