What a drum teacher needs to know to teach drums online

With the migration from classroom to online classes due to the pandemic, the way of teaching is different, especially when we talk about teaching drums online. It is not?

Music is in our DNA and is one of many people’s favorite activities! That’s why drum lessons can become very popular, but do you know how to teach drum lessons online? Or how to prepare an online drum lesson?

To solve all these doubts and some others, we have separated very important topics for you to write down in your diary and offer incredible knowledge to all students when teaching drums online.

Schedule your classes

Don’t do everything on the fly! Try to prepare classes in advance and work according to the student’s learning level. When preparing lessons, try to build content that is enjoyable for you at the time of teaching. That way, it will be much easier to teach and convey something you like to do than to force yourself to teach and please the student.

Try to be clear from the beginning of classes with the student to establish the limits that you can and want to teach drums. This way, you will make sure that the classes meet the student’s expectations. And leverage your knowledge and skills to teach in good condition.

– Divide your drum course into stages

Learning drums requires a lot of study and training! And the training should be effective, especially if your student’s goal is to play drums like famous pros like John Bonham and Joey Jordison. Therefore, set goals and teach your students to go gradually, regardless of the instrument taught.

It is, therefore, the role of the drum teacher to compartmentalize the courses so that the student can advance at a moderate pace. This rhythm can be revised if the student always asks for more.

To compartmentalize the program, you can, for example, teach one or two songs per semester. Each part of the song makes use of new skills that you develop in each class.

– Have a good computer

To start the video classes, you need a good camera and a good computer, thus avoiding misunderstandings when explaining. Always when starting the class, observe if the microphone is working and if the student is listening well to all the explanation and rhythms made on the instrument.

If possible, look for a quiet location. It could be a studio or a room farther away, to avoid someone getting in the way of your explanation.

– Use apps for organization

Applications can help you a lot, especially when organizing classes and exercises for students to train at home. It makes it easier to improve rhythmic studies and facilitates musical understanding.

Look for intuitive apps or platforms that encourage students to browse and find new rhythmic patterns to learn.

– Support the student

No matter how complete the video lessons, there’s always that rhythmic doubt or there was a moment when the microphone didn’t work right. Therefore, show your availability to resolve doubts even after classes, creating content for students to watch later or even videos of other musical groups to share.
